Your chronic health condition is likely a result of years of unresolved inflammation

Here is a harsh truth... you cannot reverse years of bodily neglect or poor lifestyle choices overnight. You can’t just visit the doctor and expect a magic pill or treatment to make everything better instantly.

One of my key messages is that over 90% of chronic illnesses and conditions we face stem from chronic inflammation in the body.

Where Does This Inflammation Come From?

There are several sources of inflammation. While some factors may be out of our control—like certain infections, environmental pollutants, and medication mismanagement—most of the causes are linked to our daily lifestyle choices. Think poor nutrition, lack of physical activity, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, inadequate sleep, and chronic stress.

When there are ongoing imbalances in the body’s immune system due to this ‘disharmony,’ it leads to slow but steady damage throughout the body, including the brain. It’s crucial to understand that even if the initial inflammation is localized to a specific tissue or organ, our bodies are interconnected. This means that inflammation can gradually spread. For instance, what starts as inflammation in the gut can evolve into neuroinflammation in the brain, leading to symptoms like depression or anxiety.

I’m not sharing this to scare you, but rather to highlight how years—sometimes even decades—of poor choices can lead to a lot of disharmony in the body. Initially, you might not notice anything; it often remains “sub-clinical” as your body tries its best to manage it without alarming you. However, if these issues aren’t addressed, they can eventually reach a point where the body can no longer cope.

Let’s be clear: we aren’t necessarily to blame for all of this. Society, consumerism, and even the healthcare system doesn’t always prioritize our best interests when it comes to profit.

The good news?

Much of this chronic inflammation and the resulting conditions are reversible!

However, it will require some effort, consistency, and persistence! You can’t erase decades of poor choices and habits in an instant. It takes gradual, steady changes to replace unhealthy habits with healthy ones and allow the body to heal over time.

Your body has a natural intelligence that knows how to heal itself; its natural state is one of balance, wholeness, and well-being. But we need to support it by providing what it needs, minimizing what it doesn’t, and creating an internal environment conducive to self-regulation.

How to Get Started

The best approach? Focus on small, gradual, and consistent changes—what I like to call ‘micro-habits.’ Trying to overhaul your entire life in one go isn’t realistic, sustainable, or very enjoyable!

Start with just one thing—maybe swap out your daily unhealthy snack for a healthier option, squeeze in an extra 10 minutes of movement, take a moment to rest and relax, or learn a technique to help relieve daily stress.

It can feel overwhelming, especially with so many areas to improve or start fresh.

Not sure where to begin? Confused by all the information out there?

That’s where professional holistic health practitioners, coaches, lifestyle medicine specialists, and complementary therapists come in handy.

At Restorative Qigong with Dr. Steve, I can help you identify what’s working for you and what isn’t, suggest ways to reduce inflammation, and teach you mind-body practices, tools, and techniques that address all aspects of your well-being—physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and social—to help fast-track your healing process.

Lastly, while I discuss reversing chronic inflammation, the ideal scenario is to prevent chronic illness from developing in the first place. With the right knowledge, actions, and lifestyle habits, prevention is always the best choice!
