Why is Dr Steve's Approach Unique?

Dr Steve's integrative health approach largely revolves around applying the concepts/principles of the cutting-edge, evidence-based science of psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) as a framework to guide Qigong-based mind/body practices together with nature immersion and lifestyle/wellness orientated peer support.

It stems from a combination of experience in western science/medicine (particularly immunology and neurobiology), Eastern philosophy/healing arts (Daoism, Qigong, martial arts), nature-based therapy and personal lived experience of chronic illness.

A particular focus of his is managing chronic stress and inflammation to restore balance and harmony in our mind and body systems.

With a background in biomedical science, Dr. Steve has a deep understanding of the physiological and psychological mechanisms underlying the practice of Qigong and holistic health.

Western Science/Medicine

What is PNI?

Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) examines the intricate connections between the mind (psycho), the nervous system (neuro), and the immune system (immunology). It explores how psychological processes, such as stress, emotions, and social factors, influence the nervous and immune systems, and how these systems, in turn, affect behaviour and health.

Put simply, our modern, fast-paced lifestyle, thoughts/beliefs and behaviours leads to a chronic stress state and nervous system dysfunction, creating an imbalance in immune system function and susceptibility to infection and chronic inflammatory diseases. Unresolved chronic inflammation in the body can also then directly affect our brain and mental health, leading to mood disorders, anxiety, etc.

Eastern Philosophy/Practices

What is Qigong?

Qigong, also written as Chi Kung, (pronounced: Chee-gong) literally translates to energy (life force) work/practice. It is a gentle moving meditation and comprehensive mind-body-spirit practice, which is a powerful combination of movement, posture, breathing and awareness. The aim of this ancient traditional practice, with roots in Chinese medicine and Daoism, is to gather, refine and circulate Qi, or life energy, to improve health and wellbeing.

Qigong has immediate and long-lasting benefits on:

  • Reduces depression & anxiety

  • Lowers stress & builds resilience

  • Regulates mood and emotions

  • Improves sleep quality

  • Calms mind & resets nervous system

  • Promotes relaxation & reduces tension

  • Improves mental clarity & concentration

  • Increases energy/vitality & reduces fatigue

  • Improves strength, balance & coordination

  • Reduces pain & inflammation

  • Boosts immunity

...and many other health and wellbeing benefits.

Dr. Steve has received extensive training in the ancient art of Qigong and GoJu Karate, including advanced techniques for promoting physical and mental well-being. Additionally, he has completed a specialized course in integrative health coaching.

Nature-based Therapy

Dr. Steve has completed an advanced accreditation in Nature-based Therapy, integrating holistic, indigenous and nature-inspired wisdom into his practice.

The power of connecting to Nature...

Qigong was created by observing natural processes and it reflects the movements and rhythms that happens in nature. There is an exchange between our Qi and the Qi of nature, to bring balance and harmony to mind, body and spirit.

With an emphasis on mindfulness, relaxation and connection to nature, we combine the therapeutic benefits of specific movement and meditation with the healing benefits of nature immersion. Qigong movements and breathing along with heightening your senses and visualization elicits powerful release of tension, and a feeling of calmness and oneness with nature.

Incorporating components of grounding, or ‘earthing’, by practicing barefoot on the earth, further enhances Qigong benefits of Qi and blood flow, reduces inflammation and allows better sleep, by realigning your electrical energy from reconnecting to the Earth.

Nature-inspired therapy programs are also provided in close collaboration with Peta Jay at Nature ZEN  (naturezen.com.au/webpage).

Personal Journey
(Lived Experience with Chronic Illness)

From Scientist to Healer...

Since 2017, Dr Steve has been living with symptoms of a severe vestibular disorder, called Bilateral Vestibular Hypofunction, or BVH.

During his personal journey of chronic illness, his study and interests turned to practicing holistic mind/body techniques, nature connection and Eastern healing arts/philosophy, which has helped immensely in his ongoing recovery. Tai Chi/Qigong (gentle movement, meditation, breathwork, relaxation, self-awareness) in particular has helped him deal with daily symptom management and coping, his mental and emotional health, and with physical recovery.

He now wants to share this knowledge, personal experience and ancient wisdom to help others live a healthy, balanced, peaceful and fulfilling life through the power of mind/body practice and nature connection.
